Peter and Tamar Sharp’s lifelong dream of owning a bed and breakfast landed them in Jackson at the Fairview Inn. Two days after they arrived, they were living a nightmare that every parent fears: their 14-yearold son Simon, Boy Scout, musician and ultimate optimist, was diagnosed with leukemia.

After quickly reaching remission, Simon began having adverse reactions to some of the chemotherapy drugs that could cure his cancer. He died 15 months later at the age of 15, one day after he recited the Boy Scout oath for the last time and earned his Eagle rank.

Students and faculty agree that honoring the memory of Dr. John E. Moffitt for work in those areas during his 20-year career at the Medical Center was an obvious choice for the 2008 yearbook. The former professor of pediatrics and senior associate dean in the School of Medicine died December 6, 2007.

In an effort to better accommodate the needs of patients, the new Adult GI Outpatient Endoscopy Center is now providing services at the Select Specialty Hospital in northeast Jackson.

“Our current endoscopy lab on the fourth floor of the original adult hospital will remain operational for inpatient procedures and specialized procedures such as ERCPs, endoscopic ultrasound, esophageal manometry, and other motility tests,” said Andy Cote, service line director for the GI and pulmonary divisions.

Ridgewood Road, will help alleviate the increased volume in outpatient procedures and provide a convenient location for patients receiving routine endoscopy services, such as EGDs and colonoscopies.

It takes just one visit to the Cardiometabolic Clinic at the UMHC Pavilion for new patients to discover that they’re not visiting any ordinary doctor’s office.

They are greeted first by a pharmacist, who reviews their medication therapy management and conducts a chronic condition assessment.
